The White Shadow (1924) - by Alfred Hitchcock (uncredited) & Graham Cutts
The plot concerns twin sisters (Betty Compson as Nancy Brent / Georgina Brent), one who is modest and socially conservative, the other a free spirit who cannot bear the constrictions of a traditional life. Their father's (A. B. Imeson) unhappiness over his bohemian daughter's lifestyle leads him to drink and dissolution.
The sisters end up having the same man, Robin Field (Clive Brook ), in love with them, without him realizing they are two different people.
The extant film ends at a most critical juncture, at which both sisters, Robin, and the father meet at a Paris boîte and are about to realize who each other is.
A 1923 British Black & White silent drama film (a/k/a "White Shadows") directed by Graham Cutts and Alfred Hitchcock (uncredited), produced by Michael Balcon and , written by Graham Cutts and Alfred Hitchcock (uncredited), based on Michael Morton' s unpublished novel "Children of Chance", cinematography by Claude L. McDonnell, starring Betty Compson, Clive Brook, Henry Victor, A. B. Imeson, Olaf Hytten, and Daisy Campbell.
The film was made at the Balcon, Freedman and Saville studio in Hoxton, London.
There are several multiple exposures when the two sisters, both played by Betty Compson, are on screen at once.
Alfred Hitchcock collaborated with Cutts, making the film quickly, to make use of Betty Compson, who had appeared in their hit "Woman to Woman" (1923), before she returned to the United States.
In 1924, Hitchcock was handling writing, editing, and art direction, as well as being the assistant director for the older and more experienced Graham Cutts. Hitchcock advanced rapidly in the British film industry. He broke into the business as a designer of title cards conveying plot information and dialogue. He refined his talent for conceptualizing and creating such pictures during his two-year tenure as assistant director for Cutts, with whom he worked on five movies. All were made on economical six-week schedules. The first three were vehicles for Betty Compson, an important star at Paramount who came to England when Balcon, Freedman and Saville, the enterprising production company that employed Cutts and Hitchcock, offered her a staggering salary of a thousand pounds a week.
Hitchcock said "Woman to Woman" (1923) was the first film he really got his hands onto, and it proved to be a major hit. Reviews were good, too. It was deemed the “best American picture made in England” by the Daily Express critic, and was among the few British films to do excellent business in the United States, and in Germany, where previous British exports had sunk under the weight of lingering resentments from the Great War.
Dazzled by their own success, producers Michael Balcon and Victor Saville rushed this second Compson picture into production, and whisked it to theaters with a clunky advertising tag: “The same Star, Producer, Author, Hero, Cameraman, Scenic Artist, Staff, Studio, Renting Company as Woman to Woman.” It also had the same Paris setting, and again Hitchcock’s scenario was based on a work by Michael Morton, this time an unpublished novel titled Children of Chance. The box-office results were definitely not the same. It was as big a flop. This not-withstanding, plans proceeded for three more Cutts-Hitchcock pictures, commencing with "The Passionate Adventure" (1924).
The financial failure of The White Shadow was regrettable, but it paradoxically helped advance Hitchcock’s career. The film’s British distributor was C.M. Woolf, who owned the “rental company” referred to in the promotional tag. Woolf was famous for despising “artistic” moviemaking, and thanks to Cutts and Hitchcock, this film was far too artistic for his taste.
Seeing its poor box-office performance, which apparently cancelled out the profits from "Woman to Woman" (1923), as proof of his wisdom, Woolf used the failure of the film to withdraw his investment. This, and the death of John Freedman in early 1924, led to the collapse of Balcon, Freedman & Saville, which subsequently went out of business.
Balcon then set up Gainsborough Productions, which went on to become one of England’s most respected and successful and, yes, artistic production companies.
The film was believed lost until the first 3 reels of a tinted print were discovered in the New Zealand Film Archive in 2011. The mislabeled film canisters, which had spent decades in the garden shed of projectionist projectionist, were donated to the Film Archive in 1989 following the death of local film projectionist and collector Jack Murtagh. The nitrate prints hailed from the US release by Lewis J. Selznick Enterprises circa 1924.
Magnificent settings, powerful sense of mood and atmosphere, and all-around cinematic excellence. The rediscovered reels of this film provide ample evidence that Hitchcock’s gift for motion-picture storytelling dates from the earliest stages of his career. certainly a solid, interesting film on its own, whatever Hitchcock's participation was.

Loved it!
The Hayes code always ruins any plot twists
The best Meteor movie ever to date
According to this film, Hitler was very similar to Trump in terms of narcissism. Crybabies nobody wants to contradict.
Dorothy L'Amour was a pretty good singer! Great voice! This was overall a good picture! A very good cast and a good story! Thanks!

OK movie but I am completely baffled why the British are shooting their pompom's during the Swordfish torpedo attacks.
Reminds me of "A Stolen Life" with Bette Davis.
Dorothy is pretty hott!
Bring it here How about saying please
Selalu wanita dengan kebohongan nya, mereka adalah yang paling handal dalam hal itu 👏👏👏
A very nice find, and why I use youtube
Thanks, Don-!
You're welcome. Hope all is well.
Very good film. Except that, other than Hitler all Germans speak perfect and decent English of the British aristocrats.
Thanks SO much for not chopping off the start and ending credits, or hiding the name, like so many others are doing now!
Dorothy Lamour is gorgeous. <3
Interesting choice of Red River Valley in the opening credits. It doesn't really fit for a movie about a swamp in the deep South.
Boring after halfway. Same as all the similar movie themes.
Could go through the above vacant houses again and again and again. Many too Many times over
One of The Best Movies On the Planet ....First saw 1984 ....and Watched it Everyday for about month ....Turned awll my friends onto it Amazing ! Aslo 1st movie introduction to The Miss Kathleen Turner and Instantly Fell in Love with her voice .. Her Charismatic Persona was just mesmerizing .... The Movie i feel is so Underrated .. Dark ...Daring ...Electric..Hilarious .Meaningful in Ways where we awll Sometimes Surpress Our Dark sides to ESCAPE Our Actual " Reality " as far as Our Own way of life ...an Escapism .. ( and how in doing that ....can give you a false interpretation of Who We Really Are and Who Want to Be ) ... however coping with certain avenues of Deceptions Can be Intriguing as Long As You dont allow it too comsume You ...( that You who is Other than Your Darkside ) ...if that makes Sense ? And Found Her Character to Be Heading in that Direction Until She Met " Bobby " who was also trapped in a Role of NOT truly being Happy in His Marriage as well ... and How Fate Brought Them Together to Connect and Relate to One Anothers Masquerade ...that was The Overawll Beauty of This Film to me !! ❤❤❤ ... Although .. the Role Playing Escapisms Were Incredibly Amazing to Watch and Learn The Behaviors of The Other Side Of Ppls Personalities. ( that still brought that Excitement of Being RISQUE and Mysteriously Alluring ) to a Hightened Level of Just Fascinating Acting .... Anthony Perkins !!!! What an Phenomenal Actor and Creepy Persona that i ALWAYS FOUND SEXY ASF ...the way he Can Utilize That " Crazy Off Balance " Mentality and Make it Psychotic Yet Still Relative to How Ppl Can Intellectually Be Manipulated by the Curiosity of " Who is This Person " with a Totally BIASED 😂impression immediately.. yet still so very intriguing to know ....❤👍🏾💯💯 ... I always Say ... " if its Not just a lil Crazy " i dont want it 😂 ! AND EVERY NOW THEN ( like tonight ) ill come to UA-cam just to see sime of my favorite Dialoged Scenes ...( for the memories ) and the fact i know the script by heart ...lol .. Yes !!! But had NO IDEA THE ENTIRE MOVIE WAS ON HERE ...WHAT A FUQN TREAT THIS WAS MAN 💪🏾💪🏾 Kathleen Turner & Anthony Perkins ....BRAVO ...( some of their best work ever ) God Rest His Soul Man ....🙏🏾🕊 love that dude !! And Kathleen as Well .. ( after this movie was when i was totally obsessed with Her work ) Romancing The Stone Body Heat War of The Roses And Serial Mom are My Favorites.. Team " China Blue " For Lyfe. ❤💪🏾💪🏾
